The Commercial Grower's Seasonal Seedling Calendar by USDA Zone

2026-08-17 19:08:09

Timing is everything in propagation. Start too early and seedlings become root-bound in their trays. Start too late and you miss your market window. This calendar helps commercial and serious hobby growers match their sowing schedule to their USDA hardiness zone.

Understanding USDA Hardiness Zones

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 13 zones based on average annual minimum winter temperatures. Each zone is a 10°F (5.6°C) band, subdivided into "a" (colder) and "b" (warmer) halves.

For commercial seedling production, the critical dates are your last spring frost and first fall frost. These define your outdoor growing season and determine when transplants need to be ready.

Zone 3 (−40 to −30°F) — Northern Minnesota, Montana, Northern New England. Last frost: late May to early June.
Zone 4 (−30 to −20°F) — Upper Midwest, inland Northeast. Last frost: mid to late May.
Zone 5 (−20 to −10°F) — Mid-Atlantic, Midwest. Last frost: late April to early May.
Zone 6 (−10 to 0°F) — Mid-Atlantic, central US. Last frost: mid April.
Zone 7 (0 to 10°F) — Virginia, Carolinas, Oklahoma. Last frost: early to mid April.
Zone 8 (10 to 20°F) — Coastal Southeast, Pacific Northwest. Last frost: March.
Zone 9 (20 to 30°F) — Deep South, coastal California. Last frost: late February to March.
Zone 10 (30 to 40°F) — South Florida, southern California, Hawaii. Minimal frost risk — year-round production.
Note: These are average frost dates — always check your local historical frost data and weather forecasts. Microclimates (urban heat islands, coastal areas, valley floors) can shift frost dates by 2–4 weeks from the zone average.
